- Le syndrome de Williams (SW) est une maladie neurodéveloppementale d'origine génétique qui offre l'opportunité unique d'établir un pont entre cerveau, gènes et comportement social atypique. Durant ces dernières années, le phénotype social de ce syndrome a suscité un vif intérêt. Les individus porteurs du SW sont décrits comme "hypersociables", très empathiques, recherchant avidement les contacts sociaux même avec des personnes qui leur sont étrangères. Malgré cet intérêt, la question de savoir si cette "hypersociabilité" s'accompagne d'une cognition sociale intacte reste en suspens. Cette question, au centre des études présentées ici, est sans doute crucial, tant il est vrai que la cognition sociale est essentielle pour que l'on puisse faire preuve d'un comportement social adapté. Dans ce mémoire, la cognition sociale dans le SW est abordée à travers l'étude de trois de ces composantes principales, à savoir les compétences de 1) reconnaissance des visages, 2) reconnaissance des émotions, et 3) attribution d'intentions à autrui et fausses croyances. Les résultats de ces études indiquent l'existence de compétences dissociées entre le traitement de visages humains vs. non-humains (étude 1), les informations contextuelles émotionnelles vs. non-émotionnelles (étude 2), et les indices verbaux vs. non-verbaux relatifs aux états mentaux d'autrui (étude 3) chez les individus porteurs du WS. Considérés dans leur ensemble, les résultats exposés dans ce travail soutiennent l'idée d'une cognition sociale atypique chez les porteurs du SW et suggèrent son implication dans le comportement social atypique observé chez ces individus. Par ailleurs, ces données remettent en cause l'hypothèse de l'existence d'un "module" social préservé dans le SW et vont plutôt dans le sens d'une approche "neuroconstructiviste" du développement cognitif. Enfin, nous discutons les implications théoriques de ces résultats en prenant compte notamment les relations entre gènes, cerveau et comportement qu'ils génèrent.
- Résumé en anglais
- Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetically based neurodevelopmental disorder that holds the promise of uncovering the underlying mechanisms of atypical social behaviour. In recent years, great interest has been directed at the unique socio-behavioural phenotype, high sociability and empathy, found in individuals with WS, who eagerly, often impulsively, engage in social interaction, even with strangers. To date, the question of whether this hypersociability in WS actually goes along with intact social cognition remains, however, an enigma. This question, at the heart of the studies reported here, is of major interest as socio-cognitive skills are mandatory for one to behave socially in an adapted fashion. The current thesis brings together findings of a series of studies on social cognition in WS. These studies aimed at investigating whether three main ingredients of social cognition - the ability 1) to process faces, 2) to decode emotions, and 3) to attribute intentions and beliefs to others - follow the atypical pattern of social behaviour in WS. Findings of these studies converge to show dissociated abilities when processing human vs. non-human faces (study 1), emotional vs. non-emotional contextual cues (study 2), and verbal vs. visual mental-state cues (study 3) in individuals with WS relative to typically developing controls. Taken together these findings provide evidence for atypical social cognition in WS and question its relationship with atypical social behaviour characterizing the disorder. In addition, these findings challenge the initial notion of an intact social module in WS and provide support to a neuroconstructiviste approach of developmental disorders. Finally, the current thesis considers the advances emerging from these studies, as well as its theoretical implications for understanding the journey from genes to cognition and behaviour.
